::: ecology flow

The ecological focus is kept wide to include public health, waste management, energy flows, pollution (air, noise, water), urban agriculture, housing and slums etc. In other words, both the 'natural' and 'built' environments will be addressed. The analytical strategy is also intended to be open-ended so as to include legal, anthropological, historical, scientific and other accounts, as long as the issue of equity is foregrounded. We expect the studies of urban environments to also resonate widely with our concern with technology and representations.

> technology emergence

The focus here is the study of emerging technological forms such as telecommunications and computer-mediated processes, and older technologies like plumbing, piped water, electricity whose implications in terms of resource use, housing styles, domestic and informal labour etc. still remain poorly understood. Emphasis will be on the appropriation of various technologies through diverse social practices. These may include the reconfiguration of geographies of work and rest; transformations effected in forms and processes of labour and leisure; and the environmental transformations that are consequent to technological change.
