> electronic zero grounds  <cartographies and networks>

The increasing mobility and circulation of people, goods and data is creating new cultural, social and virtual domains, that may be illustrated by a complex cartography. Creating usable maps of contemporary systems, regarding their technological, financial and cultural dimensions may help to oppose the development of rigid control systems, which - at the largest scales and over the long term - reinforce paranoid linearity.

What role could art play in these complex situation? A strength of artistic creativity is residing in the tension between autonomous activities and an engagement with the real conditions in our world. One specific quality of art is located 'in-between', where there is not solely a concern about the factual, but also about the vanishing points of imagined realities. Neither social work, nor 'l´art pour l´art' can serve as singular models for artistic activities. Concrete intervention, in various but specific contexts, seems appropriate to represent a new way for art to operate.

Independent laboratories are prototypes of spaces for experimental research, development and evaluation, with a strong sensibility for technological, social and political topologies. In the daily matters, in the engagement with the challenges of a changing world, convenient models for creative work are still developing.

What are available models and tools, both technological and conceptual? How to structure a functional and creative (net)work-space to act within networks? travellab will set up a temporary and mobile office in front of the former Palace of the Republic in Berlin, in co-operation with public supporters such as the University of Arts Berlin (UdK), the Academy of Media Arts Cologne (KHM) and the international research group Multipoint. The investigation of different aesthetics of solidarity will build the kernel interest of investigation.

An open strategy discussion will take its departure from the still-evolving infographic work of different research groups. Several media labs and initiatives are invited to present their activities. Participants are asked to share different concepts, manuals and tools for the activation of instant work flow and to set up a shared database on elaborated knowledge transfer.
